Clostridium tetani is primarily responsible for tetanus. The spores of these bacteria enter the bloodstream through a cut wound, surgical wound or a puncture wound. Individuals who are not vaccinated are at an increased risk of developing infection.

The complete cure of tetanus is not available yet. The treatment is accessible for the management of symptoms and prevention of complications. It consists of wound care along with the administration of antibiotics, antitoxins, analgesics, opioids and muscle relaxants.

5. What are the preventive measures for tetanus?
Vaccination is employed for the prevention of tetanus. It is available as a part of “Diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus” (DPT) vaccine. Booster doses are also recommended to be administered alongside this vaccine. Proper wound care also helps in the prevention of tetanus.
