1. What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a painful disorder in which the endometrial tissue grows outside its normal position of the uterus. This disorderc ommonly affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining of the pelvis. It can spread beyond the pelvic organs to the abdominal lining in rare cases.
2. What are the symptoms that you may experience?
The main symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain. Other symptoms include - painful periods, pain during sexual intercourse, painful urination, excessive bleeding, and infertility.
3. What are the causes of endometriosis?
The exact cause of endometriosis is not known. However, risk factors for endometriosis include environmental factors like prolonged exposure to estrogens, genetic factors, nulliparity, reproductive tract abnormalities, immune system disorders, caffeine, alcoholism and low body mass index.
4. Is endometriosis a common condition?
About 6-10% of the women worldwide are affected by endometriosis. Endometriosis usually affects reproductive age women. Thus, it is common in age group of 20-45, but it can begin in girls as early as eight years old too.
5. How is endometriosis diagnosed?
Diagnostic methods for endometriosis are - history and physical examination, laparoscopy, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and histopathological examination of endometriotic lesions.
