Ocularistry is the specialization of fabricating, creating and fitting of ocular prostheses. Ocular prosthesis, also known as artificial eyes, is for those people who have lost an eye due to certain reasons like illness, trauma or any other similar complication. An expert of this field is called an Ocularist. They take the impression of the eye socket, and then they shape a plastic shell, paint the iris and then finally fit the fake eyes. This is the fabrication process of the artificial eyes. These eyes are used as the replacement of natural eyes following an orbital exenteration, evisceration or enucleation. They are usually made by cryolite glass and so are referred to as glass eyes. They are also produced using plastic acrylic. They are in the shape of a convex lens. Unfortunately, the use of Ocular prosthesis does not restore vision. That would be the function of a visual prosthesis. The use of artificial eyes is connected with complications such as lagophthalmos, exophthalmos, recurrent infections or enophthalmos.
