Dr. Soman Sukumaran Nair

Dr Soman Nair is a Specialist in the Department of Ophthalmology at Medcare Hospital- Sharjah. He completed his MBBS from the renowned Grant Medical College in Mumbai, India and went on to obtain a post-graduation degree in Ophthalmology and additional sub-specialisation in Vitreoretinal Surgery from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, also in India. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow in Ophthalmology, the All India Ophthalmological Society and the Vitreoretinal Society of India.Dr. Nair commenced his clinical career at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India as a Senior Registrar Vitreoretina. Then, at Goyal Eye Institute New Delhi, he was responsible for single-handedly initiating the Vitreoretinal surgical department. He was subsequently appointed as a Senior Consultant for Phacoemulsification & Vitreoretinal Surgery at Vasan Eye Care Group India. The department operated from a tertiary-level super-specialty ophthalmic hospital, offering cutting-edge vitreoretinal services to patients referred from a network of 10 secondary-level ophthalmic hospitals.Subsequently, he moved to the UAE to join the Thumbay Group as a Specialist Ophthalmologist where he offered his expertise at their hospitals in Dubai and Ajman. He also held teaching responsibilities, both clinical and didactic for MBBS students of the Gulf Medical University.He subsequently headed the Department of Ophthalmology at Zulekha Hospital Dubai before joining Medcare.Having been in his chosen field for almost two decades, he is skilled at treating a wide variety of eye disorders including cataracts, vitreoretinal diseases (retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions and age-related macular degeneration), neuro-ophthalmological disorders, glaucoma and Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).He is passionate about offering the most updated evidence-based treatment to all his patients.He is proficient in performing phacoemulsification (cataract surgery ), micro-incisional vitreous surgery, retinal laser photocoagulation including barrage laser, intravitreal injections, pterygium excision with graft, ROP screening and management (lasers and intravitreal injections).He has to his credit several peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and conference presentations.He speaks English, Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil and Urdu. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, listening to classical music and jogging.
