Food, in general, does not cause skin itching unless one is suffering from a particular food allergy, pollen allergy or histamine intolerance. The most common foods which can trigger itching in most people include milk, wheat, fish, soy, peanuts, eggs, clams, and tree nuts, etc. Other foods which can cause itching include tomatoes, strawberries, melon, pineapple, and food additives, etc.

Home remedies which can help reduce itching include applying moisturizer, taking a lukewarm water bath, applying ice to the affected area, applying anti-itching creams like hydrocortisone cream, using mild soaps and detergents, avoiding skin-irritating substances like jewellery, wool, etc.

Itching caused due to internal diseases like liver disease, kidney disease or sometimes due to cancer-like leukaemia, liver cancer, gall bladder cancer, etc. and even itchy skin can be a symptom of nervous disorders like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, etc. which makes it a serious condition. Also, scratching too much or vigorously may make the condition worse.

Sometimes, itching can be without rashes due to dry skin, systemic, neurological, or psychiatric conditions. Dry skin can occur due to hypothyroidism or Sjogren's syndrome (a disease that causes arthritis, dry eyes, and dry mouth) whereas, diseases like dermatitis, shingles, and insect bites can have itching along with rashes.

When a person suffers from stress or anxiety, and it kicks in, the body's stress response can go into overdrive and can affect the nervous system, which results in sensory symptoms like burning or itching. So, anxiety, mental or emotional stress can lead to some severe itching skin problems like skin rashes and bleeding.
