Frequently Asked Questions

What is Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)?

Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) is also called Percutaneous Coronary Intervention [PCI]. It is a minimally invasive medical procedure that helps to open up or widen the blocked coronary arteries and provides blood supply to the heart muscle without any obstruction. There are different  types of PTCA and they are:

  1. Coronary artery stent
  2. PTA for femoral artery
  3. Laser angioplasty
  4. Carotid artery angioplasty
  5. Cerebral angioplasty
  6. Balloon angioplasty

What are the advantages of PTCA?

The advantages of PTCA are as follows:

  1. It is a less invasive procedure
  2. Restores the normal blood flow to the heart muscle
  3. Identifies any blockages in the blood vessels
  4. Helps in determining the right treatment for a particular disease or condition
  5. Short hospitalization
  6. Helps in diagnosing cardiac diseases
  7. Widens the narrowed blood vessels
  8. Helps in removing the plaque that is formed in the blood vessels

What are the indications of PTCA?

Indications for PTCA are the following:

  1. Heart attack
  2. AnginaI ischemia
  3. Proximal lesion
  4. Obstruction of the blood flow in the heart blood vessels
  5. Coronary artery disease
  6. Severe chest pain
  7. Congenital heart disease
  8. Chest injury
  9. Heart valve problem which requires surgery

What is the preparation for PTCA?

  1. Inform the doctor about the present and past medical and medication history.
  2. The doctor may suggest the patient to undergo a few imaging tests to check the condition of the blockages.
  3. Should stop eating or drinking before 6 hours of the procedure.
  4. The patient should inform the doctor, if allergic to anesthesia or to any known contrast dye.
  5. Discuss all the risks, complications, and benefits of PTCA with the doctor.
  6. The patient or the guardian should sign the consent form before undergoing this procedure.

What are the steps involved in PTCA?

  1. The patient will be sedated using anesthesia before undergoing this procedure.
  2. After sedation, a diagnostic catheter or a small tube is inserted into the coronary artery.
  3. Now, the diagnostic catheter is slowly directed throughout the artery until the tip reaches the blood vessel that needed to be examined.
  4. Then, a contrast dye is injected into the blood vessel through the diagnostic catheter.
  5. This dye will help the blood vessels to view on the X-ray images.X-rays of the blood vessels will be examined by the doctor and finds blocked/narrowed blood vessels.
  6. Then, a small balloon at the end of the diagnostic catheter will be inflated and widens the narrowed artery or to compress the blockage.
  7. In some cases, a stent will be placed in the blocked artery for normal blood flow. After widening the artery, the balloon will be deflated.
  8. Later, the catheter will be removed from the coronary artery.

What is the postprocedure care/recovery care for PTCA?

  1. The patient should stay in the hospital until recovered from the sedation.
  2. If there is a pain at the site of catheter insertion, consult the doctor.
  3. Use prescribed medications if the pain is severe.
  4. Consult the doctor immediately, if bleeding is seen at the procedure site.

  5. Post-procedure complications that are involved
  6. Type of hospital
  7. The severity of the blockage of blood vessels
  8. The admission room that you opted for

  1. Bleeding
  2. Irregular heartbeats
  3. Allergic reaction to the contrast dye
  4. Heart attack or stroke
  5. Bleeding at the site of catheter insertion.
  6. Formation of the clots in the stent
  7. Damage to the artery or the heart muscle
  8. Infection may occur
  9. Kidney damage

How long does it take to complete PTCA?

A surgeon may take almost 30-60 minutes to complete the procedure and sometimes it may take more than the usual time depending on the severity of the blockage and the health condition of the patient.

What is the recovery time?

Individuals who undergo PTCA along with a stent will able to walk after 6 hours of the procedure.

What is the success rate of PTCA?

The success rate of PTCA depends on:

  1. Age of the patient
  2. Health condition of an individual
  3. The severity of the blockage of blood vessels
  4. Experience of the doctor in performing PTCA

However, the success rate of PTCA maybe around 90%.

Is PTCA painful?

PTCA involves the insertion of a catheter in the coronary artery of an individual and this may cause mild to moderate pain. In a few cases, local anesthesia is given to numb the area and the individual does not feel any pain during the insertion and removal of the catheter from the artery.

Is PTCA permanent?

PTCA is not a permanent procedure as the catheter tube is withdrawn from the body after evaluating the blood vessels. In a few cases, a stent will be placed in the blocked blood vessels.

What are the long-term results of PTCA?

Long-term results of PTCA are:

  1. Decreases the chances of open-heart surgery
  2. Reduces the symptoms of cardiac disease
  3. Helps in improving the blood supply
  4. Improves the quality of life of the patient

However, in the long run, PTCA may cause hypertension and may need to perform another PTCA.

Can PTCA be detected in future?

PTCA uses a contrast dye to check any blockages in the blood vessels. This dye normally stays only for about 30 minutes to 2 hours in the body and hence PTCA cannot be detected in the future. However, in a few cases, a stent may be placed and it can be detected under X-ray examination.

What are the options if PTCA fails?

If Angioplasty fails, then the doctor may suggest open surgery to clear the blockages in the blood vessels.

What are the alternatives for PTCA?

Some of the alternatives for PTCA are:

  1. Enhanced External Counterpulsation [EECP]
  2. Anti-cholesterol drugs
  3. Anticoagulants
