What is Pure Tone Audiometry?

To measure hearing sensitivity Pure Tone Audiometry is used and it is a behavioral test. The peripheral and central auditory systems are measured and evaluated in this test. The sensitivity to hearing is recorded on an audiogram graph in a way that intensity is displayed as a function of frequency. The degrees of hearing loss are:

  1. Normal hearing - (0 - 25 dB)
  2. Mild hearing loss - (26 - 40 dB)
  3. Moderate hearing loss - (41 - 55 dB)
  4. Moderate to severe hearing loss - (56 - 70 dB)
  5. Severe hearing loss - (71 - 90 dB)
  6. Profound hearing loss - (>90 dB)


What are the types of hearing loss?

Generally, there are 3 types of hearing loss and they are:

  1. Conductive - it is secondary to an outer ear or middle ear abnormality, which can include abnormalities of the tympanic membrane.
  2. Sensorineural - it is secondary to cochlear abnormalities and/or an abnormality of the auditory nerve or central auditory pathways.
