Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping Therapy is an alternative therapy originated in China. This therapy involves placing the cups suctioned on the skin and helps in facilitating the healing process through blood flow. Cupping increases the blood flow and relieves the muscle tension, which improves the overall blood flow and reduces the pain and also promotes cell repair.  People use Cupping Therapy to complement their care for a host of issues and conditions. Cupping Therapy was originally performed using animal horns and later on the “cups” that are made from bamboo and then ceramic are being used. The suction was created through the heat. The cups were then heated with fire and applied to the skin. As they cooled, the cups drew the skin inside.

What are the different types of Cupping Therapies?

Modern Cupping Therapy uses glass cups that are ball-shaped and open from the one end. There are two types of Cupping Therapies performed today:

  1. Dry Cupping Therapy - uses only suction
  2. Wet Cupping Method - involves suction and controlled medicinal bleeding as well.

What should be expected during Cupping Therapy?

  1. The Cupping Treatment is done by placing a cup on the skin that is heated to create the suction on the skin. The cup heated usually by alcohol, herbs, or paper placed directly into the cup.
  2. Then the fire source is removed and the hot cup is placed on the skin with the open end onto the skin. Few modern Cupping Therapy practitioners use rubber pumps to create suction rather than using more traditional heat methods.
  3. When the air inside the cup cools down the vacuum is created that draws the skin and muscle upward inside the cup. It is common for the skin to become red because of the pressure difference in the blood vessels.
  4. After the removal of cups, the practitioner covers the area that is cupped with the ointments and bandages to prevent the areas from the infection.
  5. Mild bruising may be observed and the marks usually vanish within 10 days of the session. Cupping Therapy along with acupuncture treatment is performed for the best results. After the therapy, an individual is asked to either fast or eat a light meal for 2-3 hours.
