Bandaging is the process of applying a bandage over a dressing or a medical device to provide support. Bandaging also helps restrict the movement of a body part.

Compression, tube, gauze and traingular are the four common types of bandages used in bandaging. These bandages can be used in various ways like Figure of 8 wrap, spiral, reverse spiral and circular wrap depending on the part being bandaged.

3. What is the difference between bandaging and dressing?

A dressing is applied to wounds to prevent them from bleeding and protecting them from contaminants. Bandaging is applying a strip of gauze bandage over a dressing to support the injury or wound.

4. How is bandaging helpful?

In injuries where wounds are dressed, bandages are applied to hold the dressing intact. It acts as a support as well as an additional physical barrier for infection or injury.

5. Is it okay to cover stitches with a bandage?

You can cover stitches with a bandage for about two days. However, confirm with your doctor prior to putting the bandage. You can also cover the area around the suture with petroleum jelly and apply a non-sticky bandage or go as per your doctor's instructions.
