Spirometry is a pulmonary function test that is used to assess how well your lungs work by measuring the amount of inhaled and exhaled air, and how quickly you exhale. It is used to diagnose conditions like asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc.

In this test, you sit and breathe into a small machine called spirometer which records the amount of air you breathe in and out and the speed of breathing. You are instructed to take a deep breath in, hold for a few seconds and then exhale as hard as you can into the breathing mask. Thus, this test measures the amount of inhaled and exhaled air and how quickly you exhale.

Spirometry is recommended to diagnose conditions like
- Asthma
- Cystic fibrosis
- Chronic obstructive lung disease
- Emphysema
- Chronic bronchitis

Spirometry test is not a painful procedure. You may feel a bit tired, or some chest tightness during the procedure.

Following preparation should be done for spirometry test
- Wear loose clothing
- Avoid smoking one hour before the test
- Avoid alcohol a day before the test
- Avoid eating a large meal, vigorous exercise before test.
- Discuss with the physician about inhaled medications and other medications that you are taking
