Uncontrollable crying

My 90 year old grandma says she is not crying deliberately & even she can't understand why she is crying. She is schizophrenic. What to do in such situations? How to calm her? Or would it be better to let her emotions out? But what if it happens very often?

Taking her age into consideration and h/o schizophrenia Age related cognitive decline( possibly dementia)which is further may be exaggerated by Chronic schizophrenia itself will cause cognitive decline which combined causes problems with memory and depression. She seems to have mood lability . Crying for no reason, can’t make sense of things , talking to self. Is it a new occurrence , crying? Or has it been on and off. Medication dose review or addition of medication will be useful
Next Steps
Needs cognitive assessment ( memory test) and medications review

Most likely at this age she must have dementia along with schizophrenia superimposed by delirium. Do her all baseline investigation and consult Psychiatrist for best management.

Considering the age of your grandma, it could be part of a brain degenerative issue or any other Psychiatric condition. It is important to get more history to comment on a diagnosis. Treatment depends on the diagnosis
