We as arthroplasty surgeons start physiotherapy before the surgery so that you know what exercises to  do and can recover well following surgery and muscle strength would be maintained .Yes some strength would be lost because of operation pain but physiotherapy will help you through out. Specific operative  techniques are available for muscle strength maintainence like subvastus approach which will help you recover quickly.
