Recurrent tonsillitis usually happens after repeated colds due to throat infection or low local immunity.
There is no single “best” medicine to prevent it permanently.
During an acute episode, treatment depends on whether the cause is viral or bacterial.
• Pain, fever, sore throat: Paracetamol / Ibuprofen
• Gargles: Warm salt-water gargles 2–3 times daily
• Throat care: Antiseptic throat lozenges
• Antibiotics: Only if fever, pus on tonsils, severe pain, or doctor confirms bacterial infection (do not self-start antibiotics)
Next Steps
• Visit an ENT specialist during the next episode for throat examination
• If infections occur ≥5–6 times per year, evaluation for chronic/recurrent tonsillitis is needed
• If very recurrent and affecting daily life, tonsillectomy may be discussed
Health Tips
Avoid cold drinks, smoking, and late nights during colds
• Maintain good oral hygiene
• Stay well-hydrated and rest during infections
