Tetenus injection

2026-06-20 09:14:46
Today my mother age 75 has sustained a minor injury from a rusted iron object. A few months ago, she received a tetanus injection for a similar bruise, but we do not remember the exact date. Can she take another tetanus injection today for the current injury? Our concern is whether there could be any issue due to overlapping doses. Please advise. Thank you.

If your mother received a tetanus-containing vaccine a few months ago, she is generally protected and another tetanus injection is usually not required, even for a minor injury. Repeating the vaccine within a short interval is unlikely to cause serious harm, but may increase the risk of local pain and swelling. The need for a booster depends on the type of wound and the timing of the last dose. For dirty or contaminated wounds, a booster is recommended only if the last tetanus vaccine was given more than 5 years ago.
Next Steps
Consult if the wound is deep, heavily contaminated, or if there is redness, swelling, pus, fever, or worsening pain.
Health Tips
Tetanus is caused by bacterial spores entering through wounds, not by rust itself. Proper wound cleaning is most important.

Yes, she can receive another tetanus-containing vaccine if needed, even if she had one a few months ago. Receiving an extra dose within a short interval is generally not dangerous, though it may increase the chance of local side effects such as pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site. However, she may not actually need another dose if she already received a tetanus vaccine recently.
