Glad to hear you would like to save the tooth, so will any dentist.
As long as there is enough tooth structure left , the tooth will be restored.
Smaller cavities that have not touched the pulp( nerves) in the tooth, will be just restored( filled), if the pulp is infected, then a root canal treatment ( RCT) to remove the infection and a filling.
If RCT is needed you will have to get the tooth capped( crown)
But overall , saving the tooth is possible most times, as long as you don't let it break down.
