Please do not ignore it. Squirrels are rodents and rabies from them is extremely rare, but in India we do not take a chance with any warm blooded animal bite or scratch that has broken the skin. First, wash the scratch under running tap water with soap for a full 15 minutes - this single step removes most of the virus - then apply povidone iodine or an antiseptic and leave it open, do not stitch or apply mud, oil or turmeric. He should see a doctor today to get anti-rabies vaccine started if the skin is broken, given on days 0, 3, 7 and 28; if the scratch is deep, bleeding or on the face or hand, the doctor may also add rabies immunoglobulin. A tetanus booster is needed if he has not had one in the last 5 years. Antibiotics such as amoxicillin-clavulanate are given only if the wound looks infected, and paracetamol is enough for pain - please let the doctor decide the dose. Watch for spreading redness, swelling, pus, fever or a red streak going up the limb and go in immediately if any of these appear. If the scratch is only a superficial mark with intact skin and no bleeding, washing and a tetanus check may be enough, but that judgement needs someone to look at it. Just clean the site very well,  apply betadine ointment. Give him one shot of tetanus toxoid.
