Pain involving the fingers, wrist and several joints of one hand can have many causes. Common possibilities include overuse/tendon inflammation, early arthritis, previous injury, or nerve compression such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Arthritis can cause pain, swelling and stiffness, while carpal tunnel more typically causes pain with tingling or numbness in the hand/fingers.
Because several joints are involved, please get an orthopaedic/physician examination, especially if the symptoms are persistent. The doctor should check which joints are tender or swollen, your range of motion, grip and sensation. Depending on the findings, an X-ray and sometimes blood tests for inflammatory arthritis may be advised.
If you have prolonged morning stiffness, visible swelling/warmth of the joints, or symptoms involving the other hand as well, inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis should be considered and evaluated.
Seek prompt medical attention if the hand becomes red, hot and markedly swollen, you suddenly lose strength or sensation, or you cannot move the hand/fingers properly.
