Rabies vaccine enquiry

2025-12-18 13:33:15
I brought a towel from the rooftop that had been kept there for drying, where bats are present, so I am concerned that bat saliva may have been on the towel. I placed this wet towel on my bed at around 6PM. There was also a blanket lying on the side of the bed. Later, my cracked lips (due to dryness) came into contact with a part of the blanket. I am worried because this part of the blanket was at the same  area of the bed where the wet towel had been placed, and the bed had become wet due to contact with the towel. I am certain that the bed came into contact with the wet towel at around 6:00 PM, but I do not know exactly when the part of the blanket that touched my lips may have come into contact with the contaminated bed. The environmental temperature was between 5–10°C.   "I would like to know whether this situation should be considered a rabies exposure and whether rabies vaccination is required " ?

Rabies spreads only through fresh saliva of a rabid animal through a bite, deep scratch, or directly onto fresh open wounds or mucosa. Rabies virus does not survive long outside the body. It dies quickly when exposed to air.
Next Steps
No need to worry. You are safe.

I understand your concern, but this situation is safe. Rabies virus dies quickly outside the body and cannot be transmitted through objects or bedding. You have not been exposed. Its just your overthinking. You can wash the bedding for hygiene, but there is no medical risk.

This is not considered a rabies exposure, and rabies vaccination is not required in the situation Dry or cracked lips do not count as a high-risk wound unless actively bleeding and exposed directly to fresh saliva.
