Planning for pregnancy,ptu tablet
Doctor,
I have been taking neomercazole tablet for hyperthyroidism since past 6months. Now my thyroid levels are normal in recent report. I am planning for second pregnancy so my doctor changed the tablet to PTU 50mg.
I have few questions on this doctor.
Is it safe to take this even if I become pregnant? Will it cause any harm for baby's growth? Will my baby be fine?
What is the chance of liver problem or jaundice upon taking the tablets for me?
Please guide me. I am scared
PTU is the best option for hyperthyroidism in 1st trimester of pregnancy but it is associated with liver problems but the chance is less

PTU is safe in pregnancy. Otherwise, why would your doctor suggest? Hyperthyroidism is more dangerous for the baby. The doctor changed the medication for the benefit of your baby. So you don't worry and don't doubt on your doc

PTU is the safest option especially in the first 3 months of pregnancy. Neomercazole may cause birth defects in the baby and hence your doctor has changed it to PTU.
Not taking PTU can cause more harm than taking PTU. Hyperthyroidism is more dangerous for you and your developing baby than PTU in proper doses.
Yes PTU may be associated with liver issues, but it is more commonly seen in people with existing liver conditions.
The benefits of taking PTU are more than the risks. Hence, it is advisable to continue the medication as prescribed and let your treating doctor know your concerns. I am sure they will be happy to clear them!
