Oral submucous fibrosis is chronic disease affecting the inner lining of cheeks and lips.It is caused due to chewing of areca nut and related products. It is divided into many types depending on the mouth opening. There are often many treatment modalities but most common are intralesional injections (injections given into cheek)and use of anti oxidants like cap.SM Fibro.First you should be assessed by a dentist preferably an oral medicine specialist.Your mouth opening and clinical assessment would be made and depending on severity the treatment would vary.In addition to it lots of mouth exercises, blowing cheeks, use of ice cream sticks to open the mouth often adds a lot in improving your oral health.Newer treatment modalities have been promising like therapeutic ultrasound devices for OSMF patients.

There is no specific time frame for complete regression of OSMF. It depends on multiple factors like the great of the disease at the time of diagnosis, the reaction of the body against it, the habits leading to the disease and their cessation, as well as the treatment modality employed. It might not be possible to cure osmf completely in all the cases, but nonetheless the treatment aiming at alleviation of symptoms to some extent is always planned. And yes if untreated, and with continuation of the deleterious habits, osmf does carry a risk of transformation to oral cancer. Regards.
