It is very common for 1-year-olds to wake up 1–3 times at night, especially after a fever, teething, or a change in routine. This is unlikely to have any long-term effect on her health or brain development if she is otherwise growing and developing normally.
Since she is recovering from a recent fever, her sleep may temporarily worsen. Once she is well, try to gradually reduce nursing as the only way to fall back asleep by:
* Offering a good dinner and a bedtime feed before sleep.
* Keeping a consistent bedtime routine (bath, story, dim lights).
* Letting another caregiver comfort her during some night wakings, if possible.
* Gradually shortening the duration of night feeds instead of stopping them suddenly.
If biting during breastfeeding is painful, gently remove her from the breast whenever she bites and avoid feeding when she is no longer actively sucking. This usually improves with time.
If she continues to wake frequently even after recovery, snores loudly, has breathing pauses during sleep, poor weight gain, or developmental concerns, she should be evaluated by her pediatrician. Otherwise, this phase is common and usually improves over the next few months.
