Lymphocytes count is 50-55 for 10 years

My mother Lymphocytes count remain high 50-55 for last 10 years. Please find below PBS test report: PERIPHERAL BLOOD SMEAR (PBS) CLINICAL REMARKS Anemia. Clinical correlation. RBCs : Predominantly normocytic normochromic with macrocytes & ovalocytes. WBCs : Total count normal with mildly elevated Lymphocytes count on smear. PLATELET : Appear adequate on smear with normal morphology on smear. Does above result indicate Anemia only or does it indicates any other complications as well to treat.

The test report suggests a mild elevation in lymphocyte count, which could be consistent with chronic or long-term conditions, such as a low-grade infection, immune response, or other non-specific causes. Anemia is also noted, as evidenced by the findings of normocytic normochromic red blood cells with some macrocytes and ovalocytes, which can indicate certain types of anemia like vitamin deficiency or early bone marrow disorders. The results mainly suggest anemia, but the persistent elevation of lymphocytes over 10 years could point towards chronic immune or hematological issues that should not be ignored. It would be important to rule out any underlying causes, such as chronic infection, autoimmune disorders, or hematologic malignancies, even if the white blood cell count remains overall within normal ranges. I would advise further detailed evaluation, including iron studies, vitamin B12/folate levels, and potentially more advanced hematological testing if necessary. Please feel free to consult me directly for a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment options. • The findings point to two primary issues: anemia and persistent lymphocytosis. Anemia should be evaluated further to determine whether it’s due to nutritional deficiencies (iron, B12, or folate), chronic disease, or another cause. • The persistent lymphocytosis over a long period should be investigated, especially if there are other symptoms like weight loss, recurrent infections, or fatigue.
Health Tips
Persistent lymphocytosis can be caused by chronic infections, autoimmune conditions, or more rarely, hematological conditions such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). However, since the total WBC count is normal, this could also suggest a benign cause, but further evaluation by a hematologist may be necessary.
