What would happen if a needle is inserted into my dorsal hand vein and after pushing medicine the syringe was removed for 5 seconds but the needle is still in the vein? Would it suck air into my veins?
This happened with my child 15days back in a hospital .
Actually the compounder had to give two intravenous medicine separately but my child's venous was not appearing nicely on skin so he pushed the first medicine first then he removed the syringe but needle still in vein then again pushed second loaded syringe of medicine through that needle. Will it cause any air embolism? We are panicking .please suggest..
No, it will not cause air embolism. Small amount of air often gets into venous system ( via IV cannula or other surgical procedures). This air emboli enters vein and stopped by our lungs before reaching to heart and arterial system. Usually 5-8 ml / kg of air emboli can be well absorbed by out lungs. But air embolism can occur at 0.5 ml dose if the person is suffering from heart diseases where right and left heart are connected via some path as eg. patent foramen ovale. But this is an acute problem , occurs within minutes of procedure , not after so long. So Relax..
