Infection issue

2026-04-28 07:43:38
Hi Doctors, I went for an anoscopy and the doctor used the reusable anoscope which was inside a tray filled with water then he washed it in a tap water and then inserted it in anus. There were some fissures on my anus. Is this the way through which I can carry some hiv infection? Thanks

No all the instruments used in such procedures are very well sterlised and proper way of of sterlising techniques are used. You still can ask your doctor about it

Usually scopes are being sterilized using various solutions...as you are being treated by a doctor..he would be more aware about it..and how to care for you people...you could ask about it and he will clarify...

Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician (Ex Govt Medical Officer at RML Hospital, New Delhi), and your case has been allotted to me. Thank you for sharing your concern. I understand why this situation feels worrying. Important reassurance 👉 There is NO risk of HIV transmission in the scenario you described. Why this is safe HIV transmission requires: • Fresh infected blood or body fluid • Direct entry into bloodstream in sufficient quantity In your case: • Instrument was washed before use • HIV virus does not survive well outside the body • It gets inactivated quickly with drying, water exposure, and environmental conditions 👉 Simply rinsing and environmental exposure significantly reduce any theoretical risk. About medical practice • Ideally, instruments should be properly sterilized or disinfected • However, even in suboptimal cleaning, HIV transmission through such instruments is extremely unlikely and practically not reported About your fissures Even though fissures are present: • There was no direct exposure to fresh infected blood • So no risk of HIV transmission Do you need testing or treatment? 👉 No HIV test or prophylaxis is required based on this exposure Important reassurance This is a very low risk to no risk situation. You can be completely reassured. When to consult Only if you develop: • Pain, discharge, or infection locally (Not related to HIV) For personalised reassurance or further doubts, you can reach out to me directly on WhatsApp at 85271646 seven seven. Wishing you peace of mind. Dr. Romain Rajan General Physician

There is virtually zero risk of HIV transmission from an anoscope used in a clinical setting, even if it is a reusable instrument. HIV is an extremely fragile virus that cannot survive for long outside the human body or when exposed to water, air, or cleaning agents. Medical clinics follow standard disinfection protocols that effectively neutralize such viruses
Next Steps
Trust the Professional: Doctors and clinics prioritize sterilization to protect both the patient and themselves. The tray you saw likely contained a powerful cold-sterilant designed specifically to kill blood-borne pathogens like HIV and Hepatitis B/C. No Testing Required: Based on this specific incident, an HIV test is not medically indicated. However, if your anxiety persists and affects your daily life, you can take a '4th Generation HIV p24 Antigen/Antibody test' after 4 weeks for your own mental peace. Hygiene Observation: If you ever feel uncomfortable during a procedure, it is always okay to ask your doctor about their sterilization process. A good physician will be happy to explain it to reassure you.
Health Tips
For a detailed discussion on clinical sterilization protocols, a review of your anoscopy findings, and direct follow-up on your health, you can consult me directly through my profile.
