Walking problems and loss of balance can happen also due to weakness of the muscles of the leg due to use for all these years. You can rule out the brain or spinal cord related causes but do keep in the mind the local contribution of muscles. They are the structures which provide balance, strength and power.

Walking imbalance can happen because of either a cranial cause that is neurological or it can happen because of compression on the spinal cord that is the cervical cord of thoracic called so you need to get his spine woke up and the brain work of done these are the two main reasons because of which he can develop this the easiest way to diagnose is getting a MRI scan done of the brain as well as screening of whole spine and along with that you can get vitamin B12 levels also checked and then you can meet your spine doctor
