How to diagnose for ADD?

I gotta feeling that I might have attention deficit disorder. And I kind of diagnosed it myself that I might have it during my undergraduate. Feeling very bad for having it and thought mental conditions couldn't be got over with medications and only sedations are available for it I dropped looking about my condition. But now again feeling the need for some psychiatric help from a professional seems for me to be the right thing to do. So the whole point about my question is how am I suppose to diagnose my presumed mental disorder. And the next part of the question is, Is ADD a real problem or is it something made up psychiatric term that every people have those feeling of absent mindedness ( which is often in my case) and many other characteristics which I don't wanna divulge here.
