Hi doctor, I have two questions and looking for answer. I have smoked 15 cigarettes for 12 years. I have quit smoking now from last one month. My questions are below. 1. Heard that lung capacity decrease in smokers. Is it true? 2. If yes, does that affect in anyway in future even after quitting smoking.

Yes smoking does affect the lung capacity. The earlier you quit, the better it is.

First step towards your lung health you have taken- by quitting smoking! Yes, it’s true that smoking effects lung functions. To assess the present status of lung function , PFT/ spirometry is recommended. After quitting for many many years, the risk for lung related diseases becomes somewhat equivalent to non smokers.

1.yes. 2.yes.But the severity may decrease. Need certain tests for assessing the Lung capacity. Pl never smoke.pl consult pulmonologist for further evaluation and treatment.
