Depression is a period of intensive psychotherapy. It presents an opportunity for a period of intensive growth, during which the person suffering may undergo more changes than some people experience in a lifetime. For this growth spurt to occur and develop a healthy mind, a proportionate amount of the âold selfâ must be given up.
Especially within males, giving up of the old self image may be particularly difficult in our culture, for whom, âI âm OKâis frequently and sadly quoted as âIâm weakâ. This is highlighted by the high prevalence of depression and suicides rates amongst young males by various studies. The feeling of giving up something that is a part of us and familiar is depression. Since mentally healthy human beings must grow, and since giving up or loss of the old self is an integral part of the process of mental and spiritual growth, depression is normal and basically healthy phenomenon.
The refusal to let go of old forms and self-identification with it is what causes unhealthy, chronic depression. These people suffering refuse to embrace it as just a âchange in seasonâ and instead desire relief from the symptoms of their depression by resorting to pharmaceutical drugs, so that things can be the way they used to be. They donât not realize that thing scan be no longer the way it is supposed to be. But the unconscious mind knows inits wisdom that âthe way things used to beâ is no longer tenable or constructive. Hence, the process of growing and giving up is begun on an unconscious level and depression is experienced in order for breakthrough and development of a healthy mind.
Depression is normal and each bout of depression experienced in life is a symbol for change. The suffering associated with depression should not be personally identified with. Rather it should be viewed holistically - recognizing the integration of the universe, self, nervous system, thoughts, food you eat, behaviors you engage in and things ofthat nature â and taking full responsibility for it.
The mind and spirit of a man advance when he is tried by suffering. The more ground is ploughed, the better the seed will grow, and the better the harvest will be. Just as the plough bores the Earth deeply and purifying it of weeds, so does suffering and trials free a man from the petty fears of the worldly life until he arrives at a state of complete detachment. As a result, his attitude in this world will be that of happiness. The heat of the fire of suffering will mature him. Look back to the past and you will find that the greatest men have suffered the most.
The suffering from depression creates inertia for change and helps re-organise us at a higher level. Through the suffering we become rebuilt more efficient and stronger to deal with the challenges and stressors that caused the depression. This is a cyclical ongoing process. Be grateful for depression as it gives you an opportunity to grow stronger, reorder yourself and âexpressâbetter, and come out of it as a new person with renewed values and purpose. With each bout of depression you find out more off who you really are. Do not victimize, self-identify with the suffering and fall into a spiral as that would result in spiritual and physical death. Embrace it and view it as the change in seasons. Winter always leads to summer again, night always leads today. It is a vital process that is necessary for spiritual, mental and emotional evolution in gaining a healthy mind and becoming the stronger version of yourself.
