A child of 3 1/2 years with red eye..could mean numerous causes . As far as the description u provided  point towards thousands of causes of red eye which can only be confirmed by examination by pediatric ophthalmologist. . Not only Eye  infection, conjunctivitis ,adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis can present in this way  but  in this  age group yet  another imp differential diagnosis is eye trauma,and foreign body in eye commonly seen in this age and ,is alarming and requires special attention and consideration. Childs eye are delicate and not yet developed fully and also are predisposed to accidental injury which parents may not be aware of.
