In beta thalassaemia major multiple blood transfusions, ineffective erythropoiesis and increased gastrointestinal iron absorption lead to iron overload in the body.. Iron overload impairs the immune system, and cause greater risk of infection and illness. Iron overload is a common complication of thalassaemia syndromes which could lead per se to the development of organ damage.. but transfusions are important.. so, to avoid the risk and further complications, kindly consult your haemotologist immediately..
