Like you said if the RCT is not completed either you would have a filling under which a piece of cotton pellet would be placed or the filling and cotton pellet both would have gone off over the period and there must be constant food lodgement inside the tooth. Either which ways the tooth can get severely infected. If the cotton remains inside the tooth for long it rots and causes different kind of infection. Infection means a sudden shooting pain or a pus boil under the tooth in the gum or a severe swelling of the jaw and face.  Though there might not be any symptoms now, when the symptoms crop up it could be bad and severe. Please attend your the tooth as early as possible.

Your root canal therapy would fail and tooth may go into a chronic infective stage,  followed by vertical fracture of tooth which is non salvageable.  So please complete the therapy asap and take care.  And it's a must to give a crown over the tooth... Hello every root canal treatment started has to be completed with proper root fillings till the apex of roots. I would suggest you to visit the dentist and finish off the treatment before it gets reinfected. Also cap is important because it acts as a protective cover on top and prevents tooth from breaking. If the RCT is not completed, the complications can vary from  reinfection to tooth fracture to rare cases of cyst formation.... now once you have realised that the treatment was left mid way, you should take out time soon and visit a dentist for completion of this treatment before any of the complications can potentially arise.... Imcomplete r.c.t. Procedures mostly renders fractured tooth, 'n recurring caries in the tooth n might involve adjacent teeth too...., so go n visit ur dentist immediately to get ur treatment completely done to avoid further complications.
