Hello, I am Dr Romain Rajan, General Physician. Your case has been allotted to me.
I understand your concern. Eight days without passing stool in a two year old child is significant and needs prompt attention. In children this usually happens due to dehydration, low fibre intake or hard stool getting stuck in the lower intestine.
Advices
1 Give warm water frequently in small sips to soften the stool naturally.
2 Add mashed banana or a little ghee mixed in warm milk which helps easy passage of stool.
3 Keep the child active with light movement and gentle tummy massage in a clockwise direction.
What to Monitor
1 Pain while passing stool.
2 Vomiting or refusal to eat.
3 Abdominal swelling or extreme irritability.
Management
You may give a commonly used paediatric stool softener like lactulose syrup. A safe starting dose is usually around five ml twice a day after food for a two year old, but the exact dose depends on the childâs weight and severity.
Avoid giving any strong laxatives without guidance as they can cause cramps. If constipation is recurrent, we may need to check diet pattern and hydration in more detail to prevent future episodes.
When to Consult a Doctor Immediately
1 If the child starts vomiting.
2 If the stomach becomes hard or swollen.
3 If there is blood in stool or if she still does not pass stool within twenty four hours after starting treatment.
Every childâs situation is unique. For accurate diagnosis and lasting relief, it is important to discuss her symptoms, feeding pattern and medical history in detail.
