Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician.
Your case has been allotted to me.
I understand your concern. The black spot and mild swelling you see on your finger is most likely a subungual hematoma or soft tissue blood clot that forms due to compression injury. It is usually harmless and improves on its own over time.
â
Advices
Apply an ice pack wrapped in cloth for 10 to 15 minutes, three to four times a day for the first two days.
Keep the finger elevated whenever possible to reduce swelling.
Avoid pressing or puncturing the clot, as it will reabsorb naturally.
What to Monitor
Increasing pain, swelling or redness around the nail or finger.
Difficulty in moving the finger or signs of pus collection.
Management
You can take Tablet Paracetamol 500 mg if there is pain. The black mark will gradually fade within 10 to 20 days as the trapped blood gets absorbed. In most cases, it does not leave a scar or bump. If the nail was injured, it might take a few weeks for normal color to return.
When to Consult a Doctor Immediately
If swelling or pain increases instead of improving.
If the finger becomes very tender, warm or you notice pus or discharge.
Every minor crush injury heals differently depending on depth and pressure. For reassurance and faster healing, a simple finger examination or X-ray may be done to rule out bone injury if pain persists.
