Bad back catch

My husband has a very bad catch on his lower back since afternoon. Exactly where the back meets the buttock. He is able to move only with support but a lot in pain. Kept hot water back in the affected area. I need some suggestion as to what we could do at home to get relief or does it need any urgent medical attention.

How did it occur? Lifting anything? Getting up from ground? Fall? If pain is like a catch then maybe disc prolapse.
