First of all, I’m sorry you’re going through this. What you’re describing is very frightening, but it’s also something I see quite often in clinical practice.
The symptoms you mention—racing heart, chest tightness, shortness of breath, trembling, and the overwhelming fear that you’re having a heart attack or might die- are very typical of panic attacks. The fact that your ECG, heart evaluation,
thyroid tests,
vitamin B12, and other blood investigations are normal is reassuring and makes a serious physical illness much less likely.
One of the most frustrating aspects of panic attacks is that they often seem to come out of nowhere. Many people don’t feel particularly stressed before an attack, yet the body’s alarm system becomes overactive and triggers a surge of adrenaline, producing intense physical symptoms.
Breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and psychological therapy are all valuable, but they don’t work the same way for everyone. Sometimes these approaches need to be individualized, and in some cases additional treatment may be beneficial.
An important point that is often overlooked is that while behavioral techniques help change the way we respond to anxiety, the physical symptoms themselves also need to be addressed. If the body’s anxiety response remains very intense, it becomes much harder to break the panic cycle. A comprehensive treatment plan should therefore focus on both the psychological and physical aspects of anxiety.
As a psychiatrist, I can help you understand what is triggering your panic attacks, rule out any remaining medical concerns, and create a structured, personalized treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs. This may include targeted behavioral strategies, techniques to manage the physical symptoms of anxiety, lifestyle modifications, and, if appropriate, medication after a thorough assessment.
The good news is that panic disorder is highly treatable, and with the right approach, most people experience significant improvement and regain confidence in their daily lives.
If you’re struggling with panic attacks that keep coming back despite trying different strategies, don’t lose hope. You don’t have to face this alone. Book a consultation, and together we’ll create a personalized plan to help you regain control—not just over your thoughts, but over the physical symptoms that make panic attacks so overwhelming.
