Hi, and I truly feel your fear—when anxiety hits the body, especially through heart palpitations, breathlessness, and chest pressure, it feels exactly like something life-threatening is happening. But here’s the truth: anxiety cannot kill you. Even though it mimics heart attack symptoms, anxiety is a false alarm—your body is reacting to stress as if you’re in danger, but there’s no actual threat. Since COVID, many people like you have developed health anxiety, and the fear of being alone or dying suddenly is a common but very distressing symptom. Constantly checking your chest or heart is your brain’s way of seeking safety—but it actually fuels the anxiety loop.
To break this, you need two things: retraining your thoughts and calming your nervous system. Every time the fear rises, say this to yourself: “This is just adrenaline, not danger. It will pass.” Practice 4-7-8 breathing—breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8. Do it twice daily. And yes, medication or therapy (especially CBT or exposure therapy) can help you reduce the fear of being alone or constantly scanning your body. You’re not going to die from anxiety—but you do deserve to live free from this fear.
