It is one of the most common type of cancers in men and affects the walnut-shaped gland called prostate gland. This gland is present between the penis and the bladder and in front of the rectum. Prostate cancer may affect either only the prostate gland or may aggressively spread to the other parts of the body.

Although no symptoms may be experienced initially, the progression of the disease may lead to the symptoms such as presence of blood in the semen, difficulty in urination, decreased force while urinating, pain in the bones, discomfort in the pelvis and erectile dysfunction.

It is not exactly clear what causes prostate cancer. However, research says that the abnormal growth and multiplication of the cells in the prostate gland to genetic mutations is the main cause of prostate cancer.

Factors which increase the risk of getting prostate cancer are family history of prostate or breast cancer, blacks are comparatively at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer and getting an advanced level of this disease, risk increases with the age of an individual and men with obesity are more prone to get an advanced form of prostate cancer.

Complications associated with prostate cancer include spreading of cancer to the nearby organs and bones, weakening and breaking of bones, loss of ability to control the urge to urinate and erectile dysfunction in men.
