1. What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a condition that affects vision. In astigmatism, the light that enters your eye is not equally focussed in the eye. As a result, you have blurring of vision. The parts of the objects where the light falls are clear, but the rest part can appear blurred. It is a common condition which you may face if you have a problem seeing near as well as far objects.
2. What causes astigmatism?
You may have astigmatism if the curvature of the front part of your eye (cornea) is different at sides as compared to the curvature from top to bottom. This irregular curvature can be due to an eye injury, the pressure of eyelids on the cornea, scarring of the eye, after cataract surgery or an eye disorder in which the cornea becomes cone-shaped or thin.
3. Can the condition be treated?
Astigmatism is an easily treatable common eye condition. The treatment options available are as follows: prescription glasses; contact lenses; refractive surgery by use of laser (LASIK) and many other advanced laser surgeries; and use of a series of rigid glasses for one or two days for improving vision.
4. What are the signs of astigmatism?
If you have astigmatism, you will experience the following symptoms: distorted vision and blurred vision for far and near distances, headache, a strain on the eyes, fatigue of the eye and blurred vision only at some distances.
5. Can I become blind if I have astigmatism?
You will not become blind due to astigmatism. It results only in the blurring of the vision. Astigmatism is quite a common condition of the eye which is treatable with simple options.
