1. What causes a red eye?
You may have a red eye due to the following reasons: infection in the eye, exposure to sun, allergies, injury to the eye, inflammation of the conjunctiva (apart of the eye), rupture of blood vessels in the eye, dry eyes, eyelashes growing on the inner side of the eye and problems of the eyelashes.
2. Is the condition treatable?
Red eye is very common and not a serious condition of the eye. The condition is treatable at home. Simple home remedies and maintenance of good hygiene of the eyes can treat the condition. Over the counter preparations are also available for treatment.
3. Do I need to see a doctor for red eye?
You may not have to worry if you have a red eye. The condition is easily treatable at home. However, if the symptoms remain for more than two days or if the underlying cause is serious, you may see a doctor. If a child has a red eye, it is better to consult a doctor soon.
4. What are the home remedies for red eye?
Red eye can be treated at home. Some home remedies are as follows: use over the counter artificial tears or anti-allergy eye drops, use a cool compress on your closed eye for a few times in a day, avoid irritants such as smoke, pollens or fumes, do not touch the eyes often, use a clean towel to clean the washed eyes and use sunglasses to protect the eyes.
5. Can the condition spread to other people?
If your red eye is due to conjunctivitis (inflammation of eye due to infection or allergy) and if a white discharge is coming out of the eye, the condition might spread to other people. Use your own napkins, towels and bedding. Do not share it with anyone. Avoid physical contact with other people to avoid the spread of the condition.
