Since labyrinthitis is usually caused by a viral infection, it cannot be cured with antibiotics. It generally runs its course and goes away in a few weeks. Treatment is mainly given to reduce inflammation and manage the symptoms. Bacterial labyrinthitis (which is rare) may be treated with antibiotics.

Swimming might worsen dizziness in some people. Therefore, it is advisable not to swim while undergoing treatment for labyrinthitis.

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy is an exercise-based programme carried out by a trained vestibular physical therapist for people with symptoms related to vestibular disorders. The therapy works at improving balance and stability, reducing dizziness and minimising falls.

The symptoms of labyrinthitis usually last for about three weeks. If your symptoms do not reduce after three weeks, you need to visit a doctor. If severe symptoms like inability to walk, weakness, excessive vomiting or headache exist, consult your doctor immediately. Some people may experience recurring or persistent symptoms for months or even years.

The diagnosis is usually based on a detailed medical history and physical examination. Your doctor might order the following tests to rule out conditions that mimic labyrinthitis:

• Hearing test
• A CT scan of the head
• Electronystagmography (ENG)
• An MRI scan of the head
• Electroencephalogram (EEG)
