Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. It occurs due to the wear and tear of the protective cartilage lining the joints. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint, but is commonly seen in the knees, hips and spine.

The typical symptoms of osteoarthritis are pain and stiffness of the joints, which are worse on movement. There is loss of flexibility, swelling, a grating sensation in joints along with redness and warmth of skin over the joint.

Osteoarthritis is the result of wearing off of the joint cartilage with time. Other factors such as age and repeated stress as seen in sportspersons, alcohol, smoking, obesity, genetics, and bony deformities can increase the risk of osteoarthritis.

Home remedies such as ice or heat fomentation, rubbing balms, and massages can reduce the pain, stiffness and swelling. Moderate exercises too can help reduce the pain and imporve flexibility.

Treatment measures for osteoarthritis include pain killers such as acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs), physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Corticosteroids and lubrication injections may also be given in some cases. For severe cases, joint replacement surgery may also be considered.
