It is a condition where blood bilirubin levels are increased. The treatment varies depending on the underlying cause. Anaemia-induced jaundice may be treated by boosting the amount of iron in the blood by taking iron supplements; hepatitis-induced jaundice can be treated using steroids or antivirals; in an infant, it may include phototherapy, blood transfusion, and surgery depending on severity.

A person with jaundice should eat food that helps improve digestion, metabolism, and detoxifies the liver such as a large number of vegetables and fruits like cranberries, grapes, blueberries, avocado, especially citrus fruits, papaya, tomatoes, olives, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts; coffee and herbal tea also stimulates digestion. Also include whole grains, nuts, and legumes.

Phototherapy is a useful method for the treatment of jaundice in infants where fluorescent light is used when the total serum bilirubin level is at or above 15 mg per dL in infants, which emits a specific wavelength of light and breaks the bilirubin to further excrete it through urine.

Newborns can contract jaundice due to a condition called hyperbilirubinaemia. Mild jaundice can disappear on its own over a few weeks, but moderate to severe jaundice treatments include phototherapy and intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIg). In case of no response to other therapies, the only other option is blood transfusion or if the cause is different, surgery or drug treatment is required.

Jaundice is very rare in adults, but if it happens due to a viral infection, then it may take 6-12 months to heal from it completely, and in case of infants it varies according to the baby's age. Usually it takes 2-3 weeks for an infant to recover from jaundice completely.
