A gynaecologist is a medical expert who deals with female reproductive health. They help in the treatment of a variety of conditions that affect women such as sexually transmitted infections (STI), hormonal or breast problems, cervical cancer, and urinary tract infections.

There is a difference between gynaecologist and obstetrician. A gynaecologist is involved in the treatment, prevention and diagnosis of diseases associated with the female reproductive system while an obstetrician is specialised in maternity care, delivery and problems associated with pregnancy.

Some of the common procedures performed by a gynaecologist/obstetrician are:
Pap smear
Ultrasound screening
Endometrial biopsy
Tests for STI
Colposcopy (examination of cervix, vagina, and vulva)
Pelvic exam
Laparoscopy
Mammography
Fertility treatments such as in-vitro fertilisation
Surgical procedures such as cesarean sections, removal of fibroids, hysterectomy, etc.

Gynaecologist/obstetrician can treat infertility in women. They diagnose the reason for infertility and provide appropriate treatment such as prescribing hormonal pills, medicines to stimulate ovulation, antibiotics to cure the infection, and even procedures such as in-vitro fertilisation.

Females should visit a gynaecologist/obstetrician at least once a year to check their reproductive health by undergoing basic procedures such as Pap smear, blood tests, pelvic exam, tests for sexually transmitted infections, or breast examination.
