A slipped disc is a condition of your spine, when the soft tissues that cushion between the bones in your spine push out or bulge out from the original position. It may press a nerve in this process, making the condition extremely painful. The condition can become better with rest, exercise and medication.

The common symptoms of a slipped disc are as follows: numbness and a tingling sensation in the shoulders, arms, hands, fingers, legs and toes; pain in the lower back; pain in the neck; pain in the buttocks, hips or legs due to the pressing of the sciatic nerve; problems in bending and stretching of the back; and muscular weakness.

The following are the causes of a slipped disc: degeneration of the disc due to age; injury; excessive strain or sprain; if someone has it in your family; lifting of objects in the wrong way; hard exercise; vibrations due to machinery; and overweight.

If you have a slipped disc, you may take the following care: stay active and exercise daily to maintain a healthy weight; use the correct techniques to lift things; do not smoke as it may weaken your muscles; if the doctor has recommended you to take rest, take rest for the recommended time; and use a support for your lower back.

Treatment options for the slipped disc are as follows: non-surgical options include light exercise; hot and cold packs; anti-inflammatory medication; physical therapy that includes ultrasound (use of high-frequency waves to reduce pain), traction and exercises. Whereas surgical options include: removal of disc or a part of it (lamina) by surgery or relieve the compression of the sciatic nerve.
