Scoliosis is a condition of the spine in which your backbone develops a slight curve. The normally straight backbone may curve to one of the sides and appear like the letter C or S. In some cases, the backbone may even rotate like a screw. It may be by birth or due to muscular problems

The symptoms of scoliosis are as follows: the body tilts to one side and you may appear as if you are leaning to one side; one of the shoulders appears higher than the other; one of the shoulder blades appears to be out more than the other; rib cage appears more out than normal while bending; and a difference in the hip height.

Researchers are trying to find out the association of some genes with scoliosis. However, there is no strong evidence of the condition being genetic in nature. Scientists have identified only a few genes associated with the condition. Hence, the condition is a result of genetic and environmental factors in combination.

The reason that causes scoliosis is not known. Bad posture has not been reported as a cause of scoliosis. Many times scoliosis is either congenital (at birth) or developed due to neuromuscular problems in adults. External factors such as posture or heavy backpacks do not cause scoliosis.

Staying active and doing low impact exercises are one of the treatment options for scoliosis. These exercises include movement of the back, to improve the mobility and stability of the spine. Swimming is also considered as a useful exercise for scoliosis. However, the exercises must be done with a doctor's advice and under expert guidance.
