Serological testing involves blood sample tests carried out to detect the presence of antigens and antibodies present in the body. The test helps to detect different types of diseases and also the status of your immune system.

The following tests for detecting various conditions are included in serological testing: HIV (Virus that causes AIDS); dengue; antibodies for rheumatoid arthritis; presence of antibodies in autoimmune diseases (body produces antibodies against its own organs); testing before organ transplants; and test for some cancers and infections.

You need not fast before a serology test. Presence of food in the body will not affect the presence of antibodies, so there is no need to fast for serology testing. However, if you have another test simultaneously with serology test, your doctor may advise you accordingly.

Serology includes a study of the serum (clear fluid obtained after the blood clots) and tests the presence of antigen and antibodies present in the serum.Immunology includes the study of the immune system of the body and its functions. It is used to study the immune responses in the body to a particular infection or condition.

Different techniques are used to carry out serology tests. Depending upon the type of test and the technique involved, some results may be obtained in 24 hours’ time. However, some tests require few days to a week.
