1. What is blood transfusion?
Blood transfusion is the process of adding blood intravenously into a person's blood circulation in a diseased condition or injury.
2. What are risks associated with blood transfusion?
It is usually safe, as the donor blood and donated blood are tested and screened before transfusion. Itching, hives and fever due to allergic reaction are some commons risks. An immune haemolytic reaction due to non-matching blood groups, delayed haemolytic response causing a decrease in red blood cells and transfused white blood cell affecting host bone marrow are the severe risks.
3. Why is blood transfusion done?
Blood transfusion is done after a surgery and injury, blood-related disorders and some diseases. During the blood transfusion, one receives components of blood (mostly red blood cells) required or whole blood.
4. What happens during a blood transfusion?
During blood transfusion, a needle is inserted into the patient's vein; this needle is connected with a thin pipe to a donated blood bag. The patient can lie down or sit during the transfusion process.
5. How will i feel after the blood transfusion process?
You may feel mild soreness or bruises around the needle area after the intravenous needle is removed.
