Description

S-Metoprolol is a beta-blocker that works on the heart and blood vessels. It is used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain. It slows down the activity of your heart allowing your heart to beat slower and less forcefully. As a result, S-Metoprolol helps to prevent abnormally fast heartbeats. It also reduces the pressure at which blood is pumped out of the heart and around the body. S-Metoprolol prevents heart damage following a heart attack. Side-effects of S-Metoprolol are dizziness, headache, breathing difficulty, and low blood pressure. If you feel dizzy or tired, care must be taken while driving a vehicle or operating machinery. Do not take this medicine if you are previously allergic to it. S-Metoprolol can be taken with or without food. For ease of remembering, take s metoprolol around the same time every day. Make sure to eat a healthy and balanced diet. Appropriate lifestyle changes like a low-fat diet, exercise, and stop smoking to feel better along with this medicine. You may have to take this medicine for the long-term. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to stop.

Uses of S-Metoprolol

What is it prescribed for?

Hypertension

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of blood vessels. Hypertension or high blood pressure occurs when blood vessels are tightened. As a result, the heart doesn't get enough blood and increases the body’s oxygen demand. S-Metoprolol causes blood vessels to relax which helps to reduce the blood pressure and body’s oxygen demand. Therefore, S-Metoprolol is used to treat high blood pressure.

Angina pectoris

Angina pectoris is chest pain or discomfort due to reduced blood flow to the heart. It occurs when the blood vessels are narrowed or blocked. Metoprolol causes blood vessels to relax resulting in an improved blood flow to the heart. Therefore, S-Metoprolol is used to treat angina pectoris.

Heart Attack

S-Metoprolol reduces heart damage and lowers the risk of repeated heart attacks. S-Metoprolol is also used during the early stages of treatment of a heart attack.

Congestive Heart Failure

Your heart is an organ that pumps blood throughout your body. Heart failure occurs when your heart is unable to pump enough blood to body parts. The heart becomes weak and the heart muscle cannot keep up with its workload. S-Metoprolol slows down the activity of your heart and makes it easier to pump blood out of the heart and around the body. S-Metoprolol is used to treat congestive heart failure.

Bradycardia

Bradycardia or slow heart rate occurs when your heart beats less than 60 times per minute. S-Metoprolol is not recommended to treat a slow heart rate.

Cardiogenic shock

Cardiogenic shock is a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to the organs. S-Metoprolol can further reduce cardiac output (amount of blood the heart pumps out in a minute) and blood pressure, which can be harmful in patients with cardiogenic shock.

Heart block greater than first degree

There are electrical signals that control the heartbeat. These signals tell your heart muscle to contract and pump blood correctly. Heart block occurs when these signals are slowed down. Heart block is named first-, second-, or third-degree. First-degree heart block is the least severe, second-degree heart block is severe and can often progress to third-degree heart block, the most severe form. S-Metoprolol is not recommended to treat second or third-degree heart block that requires emergency attention.

Decompensated heart failure

Decompensated heart failure is a condition where there is a change in the structure of heart tissue leading to an inability of the heart to pump and/or accommodate blood within normal pressure levels. S-Metoprolol can lower the blood pressure in patients with decompensated heart failure causing a necessity for immediate medical intervention
