Methisoprinol

Description

Methisoprinol is an antiviral medicine used for the treatment of mucocutaneous infections due to herpes simplex virus (type-I and type-II), sexually transmitted infections like genital warts, and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), caused by the measles virus. It is also used in the exanthematous viral infections like chickenpox, measles, bronchitis, common cold (Rhinopharyngitis), etc. It is not recommended for use in the treatment of bacterial infections since it is not effective against them.

What is it prescribed for?

Mucocutaneous Herpes Simplex Virus Infection

This medicine is used in the treatment of herpes simplex infections, which is characterized by small painful vesicles on an erythematous base. It may be caused by both herpes simplex virus HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Genital warts

This medicine is used in the treatment of genital warts which is a sexually transmitted viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, characterized by a small bump on the genital organs.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE)

This medicine is used in the treatment of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, a rare form of chronic progressive brain inflammation caused by the measles virus.

Exanthemic disease

This medicine is used in the treatment of exanthemic diseases like chickenpox, measles, parotitis. It is also used for treating bronchitis, common cold (Rhinopharyngitis).
