Description

Hydroflumethiazide is a diuretic, also known as a water pill. It is used in combination with other medicines to treat high blood pressure and oedema (swelling due to excess water accumulation in your body tissues). It works by increasing the loss of water from your body through increased urination. Hydroflumethiazide may cause common side effects such as low blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, etc. Consult your doctor if these symptoms persist or if they become severe. Hydroflumethiazide should be taken exactly as advised by your doctor. Take it at the same time every day in order to maintain a constant level of this medicine in your body. Hydroflumethiazide should be avoided if you are allergic to it. Inform your doctor if you have diabetes, liver or kidney problems before taking this medicine. Close evaluation with respect to your current medicines is necessary to avoid any undesired side effects. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, consult your doctor before taking this medication.

Uses of Hydroflumethiazide

What is it prescribed for?

Hypertension

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a condition in which your blood pressure is consistently higher than normal. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, but if left untreated it may increase your risk of heart problems and stroke (decreased blood flow to your brain). Hydroflumethiazide is used in combination with other antihypertensive medicines to treat hypertension.

Oedema

Oedema, also known as fluid/water retention is a condition in which there is excess fluid accumulation in your body tissues. This results in pain and swelling of the affected body parts (hands, feet, ankles, etc). Hydroflumethiazide is used in combination with other diuretic medicines (medicines that promote diuresis, which is loss of water through urine) to treat oedema.

Electrolyte abnormalities

Hydroflumethiazide is commonly associated with loss of electrolytes (potassium, sodium, chloride, bicarbonate, magnesium), which may increase your risk of arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and heart attack. Inform your doctor if you experience any signs and symptoms of fluid or electrolyte imbalance such as dryness in your mouth, thirst, weakness, drowsiness, restlessness, muscle cramps, low blood pressure, decreased urine output, irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, etc. Your fluid and electrolyte abnormalities will be corrected before beginning treatment, and blood pressure will be monitored periodically.

Severe liver disease

Hydroflumethiazide should be used with caution if you have any pre-existing liver problems due to an increased risk of liver damage. Inform your doctor if you experience tremors (involuntary shaking movement in one or more parts of your body), confusion, jaundice (yellowing of your skin or the white part of your eyes).

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a condition in which your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Symptoms may include skin rash, fever, fatigue, joint pain, etc. Hydroflumethiazide should be used with caution if you have this condition as it may worsen your symptoms.

Kidney Disease

Hydroflumethiazide should be used with caution if you have pre-existing kidney problems due to its reduced effectiveness. Since this medicine is eliminated by kidneys it may also increase your risk of severe side effects, resulting from the accumulation of this medicine in your body. Your kidney function will be closely monitored and the dose may be adjusted based on your clinical condition.

Diabetes

Hydroflumethiazide should be used with caution if you have diabetes due to the increased risk of hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar levels) and glycosuria (presence of glucose/sugar in the urine). Your blood sugar levels will be closely monitored and the dose of your anti-diabetic medicines may be adjusted based on your clinical condition.

Hyperlipidaemia

Hyperlipidaemia is a condition with high blood lipid (cholesterol/fat) levels. Hydroflumethiazide may further increase your blood cholesterol levels and should be used with caution if you have a pre-existing history of this condition. Your blood cholesterol levels will be closely monitored and the dose of your medicines may be adjusted based on your clinical condition.
